Did you know that the visiting teaching guidelines changed a bit with the new leadership handbook that was written not too long ago? My Mom was recently visiting me, and she told me about some changes that had been made. When the Ensign Magazine arrives each month, a full page is devoted to the message that we as visiting teachers should deliver to our assigned sisters. This issue, however, does not have such a page. Instead, we are encouraged to read the magazine and determine for ourselves which article we feel is most appropriate for our sisters, or which one appeals to us most. As a newly called Relief Society Presidency in our branch, we were told that one of the responsibilities we had was to hold visiting teaching interviews. This was somewhat startling to most of us, as I don’t think any of the four of us had actually ever been interviewed regarding our visiting teaching. This leads me to believe that this is a somewhat neglected activity. At a recent stake Relief Society training session, I learned something about home and visiting teaching that I had never heard before. In my ten years of visiting sisters in the ward, I generally followed the message published in the Ensign. However, I learned that in various cases – particularly including new and inactive members – the home and visiting teachers have the opportunity to teach outside of the proscribed lessons. Have you ever thought about teaching your little ones about setting goals? I don’t think I ever really learned the value of goal setting until I became a missionary. Last week, our stake held a career workshop. One of our stay-at-home moms came back revitalized. She confessed that she had always been nervous about jobhunting because she felt her resume to be weak. After the workshop, she realized her many strengths, proven both at home and at church. Although many of us reading this are called to be stay-at-home moms, there are times that mothers enter the workplace.
